The Public Health Ministry confirmed Monday a veterinarian who had close contact with infected chicken last week at Nakhon Sawan province had not caught bird flu.
Deputy Permanent Secretary, Dr Paijit Warachit said a vet who had collected samples of the H5N1 strain was admitted to the Sawan Pracharak Hospital since January 27.
He was suspected of being infected with H5N1 after reporting he had headaches and a fever.
His saliva, which was tested for infection at Nakhon Sawan Medical Science Centre, showed no contamination.
"He just had a fever and now he can go home," he said.
Nakhon Sawan province was the first site in the country to report a bird flu outbreak during the past 17 months.
More than 15,000 birds in this area were destroyed.
Thirty people were suspected of contracting the virus due to the close contact with infected chickens.
They are now under observation by local public health official, he added.
The Department of Disease Control directorgeneral, Dr Thawat Suntarachan said its bureau of epidemiology reported 71 patients with flu at 27 provinces.
These numbers were recorded between January 1 and last Sunday.
Five patients from five provinces including Nakorn Sawan, Sukhothai, Maha Sarakham, Lop Buri and Nonthanburi are under close observation for severe symptom and 5 patients were awaiting test results.
Paijt said the ministry has alerted officials countrywide to monitor the outbreak and set up emergency measure to detect the disease early and prevent its spread to humans.
Phitsanulok vicegovernor Sompong Arunrojpanya called local government agencies to meet and find ways to curb its spread.
Local government will conduct Xray tests at 1,047 villages from February 129 on suspected dead fowls including 500 ducks.
Officials found 96 patient suffering from pneumonia and 19 with the flu.
But there was no case of bird flu infection on humans in Phitsanulok.
The head of Pichit's public health office, Dr Prachak Wattanakul dispatched 150 health volunteers to check the spread at 15 villages in Tambol Saklek.
Health officials kept a close watch on groups at risk in this area.
They put four houses in the areas among the highrisk groups.
About 19 people had close contact with infected chickens.
Two children under five years old had made direct contact with the dead chickens.
Prachak kept them under close observation for 21 days.
If they were found to have contracted the virus, they would be immediately sent to hospital.
Paijit said the ministry has reserved 2 million doses of oseltamivir, which is a antiviral drug used to treat influenza.
This drug is only use for patient who had close contact with infected chickens.
The ministry has established an emergency response centre chaired by Dr Paijit Warachit to tackle the outbreak.
Experts at the centre will meet weekly to track the progress in fighting the disease.
