Weera Somkwamkid, chairman of the People Network against Corruption, said yesterday he would file a complaint with Crime Suppression police accusing Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat of trying to bribe Constitution Court judges in the assets concealment case against former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

Somchai was the permanent secretary at the Justice Ministry when Thaksin stood trial in 2001 on charges of lying about his wealth.

The National Counter Corruption Commission ruled 8-1 in December 2000 that Thaksin had deliberately understated his assets in his mandatory financial declarations of 1997 and 1998.

The Constitution Court acquitted Thaksin in August 2001. The judges voted 8-7 against finding Thaksin guilty of placing millions of dollars worth of his stocks in the names of his family members and servants in an attempt to mislead regulators and evade taxes.

Thaksin admitted transferring the shares to his maid, driver and others but said it was an "honest mistake".

The court decision allowed Thaksin to continue leading the country.
