As the Bangkok governor election draws closer, key activists are making various recommendations about what the new governor should do to improve city dwellers' quality of life.

They range from a tax on garbage and campaigning for bicycle use to involving youth in good activities.

"The new city administration should tax garbage," Thongchai Panswad of the Thai Health Promotion Foundation said yesterday while speaking at a seminar on city dwellers' quality of life and the new Bangkok governor.

Thongchai said the new head of the Bangkok administration should urgently improve air quality in the capital.

Wilasinee Phiphitkul, who heads an office that campaigns for public communication within society, said noise- and air-pollution levels in Bangkok were very serious.

"Among the most-polluted areas are those along the Sukhumvit, Artnarong, Phitsanulok and Rama I roads," she said.

She, too, demanded the new Bangkok governor launch urgent measures to deal with pollution problems.

Thai Environmental Corporation Foundation di8rector Jade Donavanik said he hoped to see the new Bangkok governor create job opportunities, add more public parks and recreational areas, ease traffic congestion and reduce pollution.

Bangkok Youth Council president Chuchart Yimngarm said youths should be involved in running youth centres.

"Without youths' participation, youth centres are hardly useful," he said.

Meanwhile, Bangkok governor hopeful Chuwit Kamolvisit continued to attack the work of his strong political rival and former Bangkok governor Apirak Kosayodhin.

"If I am elected Bangkok governor, I will ensure the construction of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's new head office in Din Daeng district will be completed in 18 months," Chuwit said.

He was speaking in front of the new head office's construction site.

Another governor candidate, Leena Jangjanya, and her supporters also showed up to cheer Chuwit on. Leena promised to cooperate with Chuwit in exposing Apirak's alleged corrupt behaviour.
