Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej yesterday lashed out at well-known fortune teller Varin Buaviratlert for his predictions that there will be an event comparable to a military coup and that the coalition government will not last long - and questioned his motives.

Mr Varin, whose clients include former chairman of the Council for National Security (CNS) Sonthi Boonyaratkalin, said the government would not last beyond this year due to 'political chaos'.

In his weekly television programme, Mr Samak criticised Mr Varin for inviting former CNS leaders to attend his Sueb Chata (Extending Fate) ceremony at his residence in Chiang Mai today.

"Those staying away from the ceremony should watch their steps," Mr Samak said sarcastically.

He rebuked Mr Varin for predicting that a major change would take place in the country and that army chief Anupong Paojinda would become the next prime minister.

He said the fortune teller felt no shame after predicting that Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva would be prime minister after the Dec 23 election last year.

Mr Varin yesterday performed a ceremony which he claimed would ward off bad luck for the country and the higher institutes at his residence in Chiang Mai.

All former CNS leaders, except Gen Anupong, are expected to join the ceremony, which lasts until today.

A source said election commissioner Sodsri Sattayatham and Gen Sonthi's wife Piyada were seen among guests attending the ceremony yesterday.

A close aide of Mr Varin has denied the seer had predicted a military coup. He blamed the media for taking Mr Varin's remarks out of context.

Mr Varin earlier said that Mr Samak and Gen Anupong were close because in a previous life they both worked together in the palace during the reign of the late King Rama IV or King Rama V of the present Chakri dynasty.

Mr Samak had served as a senior official while Gen Anupong was a military officer to the monarch, he said.

They had worked alongside one another in the palace and that is why they got along well in this life, Mr Varin said.

Gen Anupong could take over the national leadership if he makes more merit, he said.

The 51-year-old seer said political chaos could erupt from the end of April to May.

The chaos may possibly lead to bloodshed.

To prevent unrest, a dissolution of the House would be a way out, he said.

Mr Samak is backed by the top brass but lacks political support in parliament, which could shorten the government's lifespan, he claimed. The government could collapse this year, with May being a tough month for it.

Mr Varin also said the country would suffer the loss of a well-known senior figure.
