Senate Speaker Prasopsuk Boondet expressed his optimism this morning that Parliament would convene a joint session to map out a solution to overcome the political turmoil.

Prasopsuk speaks ahead of a crucial meeting with his counterpart in the House, Chai Chidchob, and the opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva.

Although the House-Senate session on August 31 ended with no tangible results, the situation has drastically changed to warrant another debate, Prasopsuk said.

He reminded parties concerned that fractious politics has escalated to reach a critical point which could bring down the country and not just the collapse of the political system.

He said he is willing to do everything he could, such as mediating with the People's Alliance for Democracy, to overcome the turmoil.

Meanwhile, Election Commission member Prapun Naigowit said preparations for a referendum vote might take six to seven months.

Chiang Mai University's Faculty Senate meanwhile called on Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej to either step down or dissolve the House, in order salvage the country on the brink of ruins.
