Former prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh yesterday advised ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to clarify the lese majeste allegations directed against him, according to an inside source.

Mr Thaksin visited Gen Chavalit yesterday to wish him a happy birthday. Gen Chavalit gave him the advice in a chat which lasted one hour.

One of the grounds which the military used when they toppled Mr Thaksin in the 2006 coup were allegations of lese majeste against him.

Gen Chavalit also said there have been no revolutions in Thailand, only military coups. ''A revolution would have changed the country for the better,'' he said.

He suggested that Mr Thaksin clear the air over the lese majeste allegations and seek a royal audience.

According to the source, Mr Thaksin told Gen Chavalit that he wanted a chance to clarify the allegations and insisted that toppling the highest institution in the country had never crossed his mind.

Speaking later while making merit at a temple to mark his 76th birthday, Gen Chavalit said there were no plans to attempt to overthrow the monarchy.

He admitted that ''progressive thought'' about creating a republic might exist, but added that it would not work.

When asked if people entertaining such thoughts were policy-makers and would they be capable of wielding enough power to effect any changes, Gen Chavalit said any change in that direction was unlikely.

''It would be a blunder and we should talk to them to clear the air. The monarchy is always our highest institution,'' he said.

Gen Chavalit had previously claimed there was a movement to bring down the constitutional monarchy.

He yesterday called on the public not to go overboard with the constitution amendment issue.

''I think we had better focus on people's standard of living. The government is trying but the media do not give it enough space,'' he said. ''The constitution is important but we should not overdo it and take the people and country for granted,'' he said.

Joining him at the merit-making ceremony were Chart Thai executive Gen Yutthasak Sasiprapa, former deputy army chief Gen Vichit Yathip and former army chief-of-staff Gen Charn Boonprasert. Gen Chavalit also gave guests copies of his book on strategy and tactics against national security threats. In the book he criticised politicians, academics, media and the armed forces and listed 10 evils in Thai politics. One was that the military did not know of revolutions, only coups.
