Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat and opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva were on the campaign trail Sunday, helping their respective candidates on the last weekend before the election for Bangkok governor

With city voters heading for the polls this Sunday, the 16 candidates are into the final week of their campaigns.

Only four contenders are in serious contention: the previous governor, Apirak Kosayodhin of the Democrat party; Prapas Chongsa-nguan of the People Power party (PPP); and two independents, Chuwit Kamolvisit and Kriangsak Charoenwongsak.

According to the Suan Dusit and Abac pools, Mr Apirak has a comfortable lead. He will unveil his team on Monday, just six days before the vote.

Despite being buoyed by the survey results, Mr Apirak's campaigners worry his supporters could become complacent and not bother to vote.

"We have to make sure that voters come out to vote for him, instead of staying at home," one team member said.

Mr Abhisit headed Mr Apirak's campaign on Sunday, paying respect to King Rama V at the Royal Plaza and then launching a convoy of canvassers to all 50 districts in the capital.

The prime minister joined Mr Prapas, first at Siam Paragon shopping centre, where they were heckled by supporters of the People's Alliance for Democracy, and then went aboard the BTS skytrain.

Mr Somchai promised voters his candidate's experience as former chief of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand would enable him to find an effective solution for traffic congestion in Bangkok.

Mr Chuwit is also depending for help from PPP supporters. He hopes they will vote for him if they think Mr Prapas does not have a good chance of beating Mr Apirak.

"They could do whatever they consider necessary to prevent a Democrat victory," he said.

Mr Chuwit on Sunday paid respect to revered monk Somdej Phra Phutthacharn, abbot of Wat Saket, and said afterwards that he had turned over a new leaf and was determined to serve the public. His biggest worry is that voters will be deterred by his past record as a massage parlour tycoon.

Ong-art Klampaiboon, who is in charge of the Democrat campaign, warned of legal action against any unfairness in the race, including groundless accusations intended to damage Mr Apirak's chances.

Mr Kriangsak has said he does not believe in the polls and is confident the policies he has outlined for Bangkok will convince enough people to install him in City Hall.
