Some 1,000 members of a pro-government group rallied behind the Samak Sundaravej administration yesterday on the eve of a mobile Cabinet meeting to be held today in the northeastern province of Udon Thani.

The "We Love Udon Thani" group held their rally around Udon Thani provincial hall.

Provincial police beefed up security by deploying 700 officers. They dismissed fears about possible clashes between pro and antigovernment supporters. However, locals are afraid that wearing a shirt with the wrong colour could lead to retribution.

The multipurpose lawn in front of the provincial hall was filled with people as the government launched a mobile medical clinic and set up booths to offer advice about land and agriculture. Suphot Laowansiri, governor of Udon Thani, said the activities provided a one-stop service for local people.

Interior Minister Kowit Watana, who presided over the event yesterday, took the opportunity to rally more support for the ailing Samak administration.

"Today bad people must be dealt with. We built jails to incarcerate bad people and rest assured that the government will deal with bad people," he told the crowd.

He added that the country does not belong to a group of people but to 60 million Thais.

The pro-government group, mostly donning red, which also supported former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, said some 2,000 will show up today to welcome the Cabinet.

However, some locals fear donning a wrong colour dress could be dangerous.

"The situation now is quite tense. We don't know who is who so we must wear yellow in love of the King. I think nobody will harm us. But wearing the wrong colour could lead to attack," said a local food vendor who asked not to be named.

Local police, however, told the media that the security will be tight and no clashes are likely to occur.
