As opposition and activists rake up issue, sports fans and players urge restraint
Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama says former PM Thaksin Shinawatra has asked Manchester City Football Club to post an online message appealing to fans not to deface the Thailand flag.
The message says this is inappropriate.
He says Thaksin is "uncomfortable and upset" to learn his name was printed on the flag and displayed at City's last home match.

Thaksin says the supporters are glad that a person from Thailand owns the team and has brought it success. This is why they put his name on the flag.
However, the former PM, who is now in Russia, promises these antics with the flag will not be repeated.
Meanwhile, the issue was raised in the House yesterday by the opposition.
Unfortunately, interim House speaker Somsak Kiatsuranont didn't allow Democrat MPs to debate the issue.
Later, Democrat MP Sirichoke Sopa held a press conference were he demanded an investigation, rather than simply concluding it
was an act by unknowing supporters of the football club.
"It's impossible to buy huge Thailand flags in foreign countries. I studied in England for more than 10 years.
"I've never seen any shops selling Thailand flags as big as the one in the photo," he says. He doubts Thais were behind the incident, however.
Matichon newspaper on Tuesday published a picture of the flag taken as City lost 3-2 to Fulham at the City of Manchester Stadium in the English Premier League this past weekend.
Activist Veera Somkwamkit says he will today ask the police to charge Thaksin with involvement in allowing a defaced national flag to be displayed at his club.
