The four candidates for the gubernatorial post speak about their policies and programmes
Why I should be your Bangkok governor?
By Prapat Chongsanguan
To put it more specifically, why should Mr Underground Train - a man of no brand promise, as people called me - be justified to run Bangkok as the governor?
Well, let me put it this way (in 300 words - the editor says).
First, I'm not a brand. I'm real. I breathe. I'm alive. I'm a man. I'm not a product. A product must have brand promises, which can be changed, adjusted or even dropped. A REAL man must not. You must not promise what you are not sure about. It's called a LIE, to me. My promise, as a real man, to all voters is: I'm real. I will do what I said. I won't say what I won't or can't do. May sound too simple, but I believe Better Real than Beautiful and Fake.
Second, I don't believe in telling half-truths, half-imagined stories and call them policies. I have been a doer and I will continue to be this way. That may disappoint many voters, as candidates are expected to announce lots of policies and projects to draw a dream to change Bangkok. Mine are simple; develop feeder systems and a common ticket as mass-transit policies, get rid of garbage systematically, clean canals by taking the dirty water for direct treatment, etc. More details are on www.prapat10.com, if you care to read. All are for real. Ordinary. Nothing fancy.
Third, I believe in myself, as a challenger of the unknown, and my experience as MRTA governor. Let me tell you one thing. Working as the MRTA governor does not simply mean digging a hole to get a train to run back and forth. In any big city, an underground is a part of urban planning. To develop a plan and make it happen in Bangkok, nobody knows where to start or what to do. That's a big challenge. I've already challenged them and made it happen. I will do it again for Bangkok, as I believe Bangkok needs a doer who is also a challenger, not the other way around.
Why I should be the governor of Bangkok?
By Apirak Kosayodhin
Four years have passed by. I have started many good projects for Bangkok. Unfortunately, some could not be completed in one term, and therefore I ask for four more years as governor. I ensure you that my years of management experience can lead Bangkok to be the world's most pleasant city.
Bangkok is unique in its diversity. I experienced the complexity of the city management. I truly understand Bangkokians' needs, which are significantly different in many groups ranging from teens to seniors, from blue-collared people to elites, from Klong Toei residents to Sukhumvit inhabitants.
Most importantly, I love Bangkok; I have the will to use all of my professional management experience, including my four years of work as a Bangkok metropolitan leader to continue my established long-term policies and to start new great things. I have planned five essential policies: environment, quality of life, children and education, traffic, and economic policies.
In the past four years, I have devoted myself both physically and mentally to work for all Bangkokians, without hesitation, despite impediments or political taints. I have always made resolute attempts to push for important projects, although working under political pressure and under the dramatic changes of three national governments. I strongly believe that all Bangkokians can see the changes of Bangkok in a good way.
On January 29, 2004, all of you kindly entrusted me to take this honourable responsibility by nearly one million votes. Since that day, my will has never changed, my spirit and purpose are still clear. We have come this far, we will never stop. We have planned several key policies and strategies with public involvement in every part of the developments. Bangkok citizens, the private sector, and the government will together sustainably develop for all Bangkokians and our children, who will continue to live in our "Future Bangkok" to enjoy even better quality of lives.

Because I don't belong to any political party, it makes me feel free to work. I have no duty to patronise any political party.
I have two main policies.
First, there will be no corruption during my term in office.
Second, I will develop Bangkok while taking into account the problem of global warming. At least, during my period as governor, the development of Bangkok will not increase global warming.
Otherwise, I will continue the policy of the governor Apirak Kosayodhin. I accept that we have contrasting opinions but I promise that some of the good policies from his period will continue.
I first publicly appeared to run for Bangkok's governor in May. I thought that these five months were enough to learn, analyse and prepare my plan and policies to solve the problems of Bangkok and develop the city. I will continue my fight and am ready to accept the decision of the people of Bangkok Thank you.

If you want to see Bangkok change, you will vote for me as I am not seeking election as a politician, but as a "city builder" who will establish this city on the bedrock of wisdom. During the next four years, you will see me pouring my entire effort into the future creation of Bangkok city because I believe Bangkok has been stuck in the mud for too long, stymied by governors' excuses. But I pledge my commitment to solve your problems through wisdom.
An obsolete idea yields nothing but perpetual problems, while innovative wisdom can resolve all issues. Though not bound by budget or jurisdiction limitations, we are certainly bound to the restrictions of our own creativity. For instance, traditional concepts will cling to massive public transportation in curbing Bangkok's traffic congestion. But, from a novel perspective, I will add one policy to discourage commuter traffic building up to inner city workplaces. Bangkok office desks will be moved nearer to family domiciles, to a second workplace zone on Bangkok's outskirts, known as Metroport.
Now is the perfect time for Bangkok to choose an independent governor. Several years have now sluggishly passed by with our city immobilised by political conflict, caught between two diametrically opposed parties that have impeded the coordination necessary to develop Bangkok.
I assure you with confidence that my policies can be implemented; they have been thoroughly prepared over the past year for implementation in Bangkok. Thus, it will not be necessary to wait for two years of project studies and four years to see them as just a flash in the pan. Each of my projects has been planned in detail as to when and how to put them into practice, being aware of the four-year, or 1,460-day, term of execution.
