Yacht racing in the Gulf of Thailand is at last coming of age. Not only does Thailand boast good sailing in the Phuket area, but now the sport is really taking off for Bangkokians as well as yachtsmen from all over the Asia Pacific region.
More and more yachtsmen are discovering the pristine and breezy sailing conditions in the Gulf of Thailand between Sattahip and Pattaya.
The 4th Top of the Gulf Regatta will be held from May 1-5. The first three regattas have built up to what is now one of the biggest multi-class sailing events to be seen not only in Thailand, but in Asia.
This year the organisers of the event expect more than 200 sailing vessels on the water for the four-day regatta. These will include:
FAround eight to 10 of the brand new, ocean-going fast Corsair trimarans.
FA class of super-fast Firefly catamarans that have become famous in the last two King's Cup Regattas in Phuket with their thrills and spills IRC ocean-going racing keel yachts.
FOcean-going cruising keel yachts.
FThe international Platu 25 sportsboat class _ probably up to 20 yachts competing.
FHobie Tigers from Royal Varuna and around Asia Pacific.
FOther off-the-beach catamarans, including Nacras.
FScores of Children's International Optimist sailing dinghies.
