Former boxer Somluck Kamsing, Thailand's first-ever Olympic champion, believes that the current boxing squad could become more successful than the 2004 team. The Thai boxing team clinched one gold, one silver and one bronze in the 2004 Olympics in Athens where Somluck lost in his opening bout.
Somluck, who won Thailand's first Olympic gold in 1996, said with good preparation and conditions in Beijing which are similar to those in Thailand, the Thai team could do even better than the 2004 squad.
''China and Thailand are not much different. Competing there is like fighting in our own country,'' he said.
''We have a team of young and veteran boxers. I think many of them are good enough to win gold.''
It is easier to score in boxing these days although winning gold is still as tough as it was, he said.
''Watching boxing is like watching basketball. The score runs quite fast,'' he said.
In 1996, Somluck, then 23, beat Bulgarian Serafim Todorov 8-5 in the featherweight final while Manus Boonjumnong defeated Yudel Johnson Cedeno of Cuba 17-11 to win the light-welterweight gold four years ago.
Thailand will have eight fighters in Beijing including Manus.
Meanwhile, Toyota Motor Thailand yesterday announced it would give a pick-up truck worth 800,000 baht to a gold medallist while a silver medallist and a bronze winner will receive a cheaper one.
