Olympic weightlifting gold medallist Pawina Thongsuk announced her retirement yesterday because of a knee injury.

''It's time for me to retire,'' said a tearful Pawina at a press conference. ''I have suffered an injury to my right knee since the Doha Asian Games two years ago.''

Pawina, who won the gold in the 75kg division at the Athens Olympics, said she wanted to try to win another gold at the Beijing Games but her body did not allow her to do so. ''I am not as fit as I was four years ago. It's time for me to quit to open the way for younger lifters.''

The Surin native, who is based in Chiang Mai, said she would like to become a coach but the 2008 Olympics would be too soon for her to do the job.

One of the most versatile women's weightlifters of all time, Pawina won several titles in 63, 69 and 75kg divisions in major international tournaments including the Olympics, the World Championships and the Asian Games.

She is also the world record holder in the three weight classes. She also won golds in lesser events including the SEA Games and the World University Games.

At the 2004 Athens Games, Pawina and Udomporn Polsak were the first Thai female athletes to have won Olympic gold.
