KITTIPONG THONGSOMBAT
Olympic boxing bronze medallist Suriya Prasathinphimai has been banned for one year by Thai authorities for doping during last year's SEA Games. Gen Taweep Jantararoj, president of the Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand (Abat), said although Suriya, who won gold at the Games in his home province of Nakhon Ratchasima, claimed he was innocent, Abat had no choice but punish him.
He said he believed the middleweight boxer did not take the banned substances on purpose as he was too strong for his opponents during the SEA Games and would anyway win gold.
Suriya, 26, has been stripped of his SEA Games gold medal and could be further punished by the International Amateur Boxing Association.
Suriya was one of the five athletes who failed dope tests at the biennial event along with another Thai, volleyball player Supachai Jitchamroon.
Meanwhile, eight Thai boxers who have qualified for the 2008 Olympics will take part in the Paris Open next week. After that, they will fight in the President's Cup in Taiwan in their last warm-up tournament
