The Royal Trophy Golf Championship announced yesterday the number of players representing the Asian and European continents will be increased from eight to nine to mark the 80th birthday of His Majesty the King.
The decision to increase the number of members representing the teams is a gesture of appreciation for His Majesty's gracious donation of the 16-kilogramme solid-silver Royal Trophy.
The Royal Trophy has featured eight players in each of the two teams for the first two editions, both held in Thailand in 2006 and 2007.
"As a Thai and a member of the Asian Team for the Royal Trophy for the third year, I am delighted with the extension of the number of players representing each team.
"This is our very humble way of honouring His Majesty," said Asian Team veteran Thongchai Jaidee.
"We will do our utmost in playing our hearts out," added the Thai golfing hero. "This is an opportunity of a life time for our Asian Team," said new team member and two-time Tour winner in 2007 Chapchai Nirat.
Already confirmed to represent the European Team in the Royal Trophy on January 11-13 at the Amata Spring Country Club are four-time Ryder Cup team member Darren Clarke, Ireland's Paul McGinley, European PGA Championship winner Anders Hanson and the Swedish pair of Robert Karlsson and Niclas Fasth.
The Joe Ozaki-led Asian Team will count with the former European Masters champion Jeev Milkha Singh, Korean ace Charlie Wi, Japan's number one player Toru Taniguchi, British Open fifth place Hideto Tanihara and the powerful Thai trio of Prayad Marksaeng, Thongchai and Chapchai.
