Local mechanical whiz-kids scoop gold - again - at RoboCup contest

For the third successive year students from Thailand have taken home first prize in the rescue-robot contest at the annual international robot competition.

Entries from Thailand won first and third places in the robot football event, too, for the first time at RoboCup 2008.

The event was held in Suzhou, China and wound up yesterday. The competition is an international joint project to promote artificial intelligence and robotics.

In the RoboCupRescue category, the five-member Plasma RX team from Chulalongkorn University engineering school beat out three other countries.

Under 'huge pressure'

In the two previous Robo-Cups, in Germany and the US, Team Independent from King Mongkut's Institute of Tech-nology, North Bangkok, won first prize in the rescue category.

Plasma RX comprises team captain Kamol Juengsathien-sab, Chanin Janma, Panas Wi-bulpholprasert, and Yutthana Sutthasupha and Nawarat Termthanasombat, the sole woman.

In the football competition, Team Plasma Z of Chulalong-korn grabbed first in the small-size league and Team Skuba from Kasetsart University secured third.

Skuba won second in the technical challenge category.

Nawarat says Plasma RX was under "huge pressure" to prevail this year, following this country's success in the two years just past.

Siam Cement Group chief communications officer Mat-thana Luengnarkthongdee promises more company support for the local rescue-robot championship. It's planned to upgrade that into an international event, too.

Saving lives

According to the RoboCup Federation, artificial intelligence and robotics is advanced by "providing a standard problem where a wide range of technologies can be integrated and examined".

The rescue event encourages engineers and designers to create machines that can replace humans in saving lives in dangerous situations.

The federation says the "ultimate goal of the RoboCup football event is to develop a team of fully autonomous humanoid robots that can beat the human world champions".
