AYUTTHAYA : Police are investigating the death of a two-month old girl who was in the care of her mother in Ayutthaya prison. The girl, Butruen, was born on Feb 6 while her mother, a 24-year-old Vietnamese national, was in jail on drug charges. Boonruen has no relatives to take care of the baby.
According to a prison report, the infant was admitted to hospital with serious head injuries on Friday. Prison officials told the hospital the girl ''fell from a high place'', hospital director Weerapol Teerapan said.
The young girl's heart stopped beating. Doctors used a defibrillator to stimulate her heart and it beat again for a while. She was later pronounced dead, he said.
An examination revealed she died of a severe wound on her forehead caused by a sharp object, he said.
Prison head Pricha Suworapong said the death was an accident.
The initial police investigation found Butruen was with her mother, who was learning fruit carving in the prison library. Another inmate asked to hold her, but while taking the girl from the mother, she accidentally dropped her. The child's head was struck with a carving knife, Mr Pricha said.
Police have charged the woman who dropped the girl with carelessness causing death.
Ayutthaya governor Cherdphan na Songkhla said he did not think the woman meant to kill the girl.
The outcome of the police investigation is expected today.
Boonruen and her Vietnamese husband Riam, 29, were jailed for 18 months in January on charges of drug possession.
