Four soldiers on routine patrol were injured by a roadside bomb in Pattani's Khok Pho district yesterday morning. The bomb went off as the six-man patrol was making its regular rounds guarding rubber tappers along a local road in tambon Naket.
Cpl Maneekorn Prathum was the only one seriously injured.
Also in Pattani, two suspected militants wanted for involvement in a string of deadly attacks were arrested yesterday during raids by security forces in 12 districts of the province.
Police claim Ibrohhem Hayeehaza was involved in several attacks in Yarang district this year, while Masakkee Etae allegedly took part in a shooting in Sai Buri district during the Dec 23 general election.
A motorcycle belonging to a member of a local insurgent group was also seized from a deserted house during the synchronised operation.
In Narathiwat, Chongrak Palasai, the rector of Princess of Narathiwat University (PNU), signed a cooperation pact with Kanit Rattanakornkul, the southern operations director of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat).
It is aimed at curtailing thefts of metal nuts, bolts and cross-braces from power pylons in the province.
PNU students will be sent to reinforce the structures and make it more difficult to remove the parts.The theft of nuts and bolts in early May damaged at least 10 power pylons in three districts, leading to a power blackout that caused damage of nearly 100 million baht.
Narathiwat governor Karan Supakijvilekakarn yesterday presided over an Islamic ceremony to condemn the insurgents responsible for the May 20 killing of Sa-arrohning Samoh, 50, a member of the provincial Islamic committee.
