Deputy Interior Minister Banyat Jansena, the director of the centre, said 440 road accidents were recorded, with most occurring from 4pm-8pm. More than 80 per cent of them involved motorcycles.
The biggest cause of accidents was drunk driving, at 30.9 per cent, followed by speeding (23.4 per cent).
Ratchaburi saw the most deaths at three, while Nakhon Pathom suffered the most injuries at 25 and Chiang Mai the most accidents at 23, he said.
A million vehicles were stopped at checkpoints nationwide and 29,706 motorists were found breaking traffic laws, mostly for not carrying a driver's licence - 37 per cent - and for motorcycle drivers not wearing helmets (34 per cent).
The Road Safety Centre has set targets to reduce road accidents to 4,133 and deaths to 413, while injuries are estimated at 4,568 cases over the seven-day danger period from last Friday to next Thursday.
The period is notorious for road accidents and congestion on highways especially to the North and Northeast, as hundreds of thousands of New Year celebrants travel back to their home provinces or leave for holidays upcountry and return to Bangkok.
Yesterday morning, traffic leading to Bangkok's Mor Chit bus terminal was heavy as passengers arrived before dawn to improve their chances of booking seats. More than 70 spare coaches were available in case those assigned by the state-run Transport Co and private operators could not cope with demand.
The scene over at Bangkok's Hua Lamphong railway station was also hectic, as some 15,000 passengers were expected to flee the capital for the New Year break - fewer than the 20,000 who departed on Friday.
Five people were killed and three were seriously injured in a road accident on Phetkasem Road in Nakhon Pathom's Nakhon Chaisi district early yesterday morning. Two pickup trucks were involved, with one found to have opened liquor bottles on board.
