Narathiwat - A combined force of more 100 police and soldiers arrested five suspected militants in the southernmost district of Tak Bai, police said Monday.

All five suspects had arrest warrants issued by the court but the authorities decided to detain them under the controversial Emergency Law that permits 30 days detention without charges or legal protection.

The five are identified as Anuwa Yunu, 29, Sakree Awae, 24, Sakree Yunu, 28, Sophia Musor, 29, and Lukmang Musor, 25.

The five were taken to the Tak Bai station and then to the Fourth Army's Forward Command in Pattani.

In Pattani, provincial governor Panu Utairat, Task Force commander Major General Thawatchai Samutsakorn, and director of the Forensic Science Department Dr Pornthip Rojanasunan, paraded 102 former suspected militants in front of the media.

They claimed they were former militants and sympathisers who had decided to end their armed struggle against the state.

The suspects were not permitted to speak to the media in what appeared to be a desperate public relations exercise amid daily attacks against government installations by militants.

Relatives of the 102 said local officials coerced them into attending the press conference and none of them admitted any wrong doing and appeared to sympathise with the separatists.

Meanwhile, the Democrat Party executives, including Suthep Thaugsuban led a team of party officials to the deep South for a series of town hall meetings with local residents.

Input from the meetings will be incorporated in the party's policy for the south.
