AYUTTHAYA : A 47-year-old farmer committed suicide yesterday as pests had destroyed most of his crop and ended his dream of using the money from rising rice prices to clear his debts.

Wallop Ampanthong was found dead in his house in Sena district of this central province at about 11am yesterday, just a few days before the harvest. He had an exit wound from a bullet on the nape of his neck. Laid nearby were a 9mm pistol, a bottle of drinking water and a glass.

Deputy district police chief Pol Lt-Col Kittisak Chaisaengrat confirmed yesterday that Wallop committed suicide. Police believe he shot himself through his mouth.

His wife, Mrs Samruay, 46, said in tears that her husband had been extremely tense over recent days as they had lost almost all the paddy in a 40-rai land plot to pests.

The family of eight, only four of whom are of working age, was about to harvest the rice over the next few days and hoped to clear their debts as paddy is currently priced at 10,000 baht a tonne.

They expected to gather a harvest of 46 tonnes that could be sold at 460,000 baht, but pests left only about five tonnes. As the head of the family, Wallop had no idea how to repay a 50,000-baht loan borrowed from the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives and more from other creditors, his wife said.

She said she had tried to console her husband but to no avail.

At the time of the suicide he was in the bedroom while his children were in the front yard and she was in the back of the house, she said.

Other relatives were also there and announced they were coming in to see Wallop. Soon everyone rushed to the bedroom and found he was already dead, she said.

She said her family had always depended on rice farming but had been in perpetual debt.
