The Bangkok governor's advising team has asked that a special panel be set up to look into accusations of a highranking official's sexual misbehaviour and corruption.
Dr Pensri Pichaisanith, an advisor to Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin, said yesterday the governor already knew who official in question was because he had been sent a letter detailing the case by a women's rights advocate last month.
However, how the case is dealt with still depends on Apirak, she said.
Pensri said she would like Apirak to set up a panel that is responsible for gender equality in the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA) or appoint a Chief Gender Equality Officer (CGEO) because every government organisation already has one.
She said she believed that having a CGEO would bring about justice and stop such scandals from occurring again.
The official in question is accused of having sexual relationships with six female subordinates and of corruption. It was also reported that the affairs were conducted for personal interest.
Women's rights groups received complaints about it from BMA staff last month.
"People have known about the issue even before Apirak took over as governor. The reason why previous governors did not deal with it was probably because they did not consider it an urgent matter. However, women's advocacy groups have initiated steps to tackle with the scandal and BMA executives should rush to examine the case," Pensri added.
Meanwhile, the chief advisor to Apirak, Nipon Boonyapattaro said he would tell the governor to look into the matter immediately because it affected BMA's image.
He said it did not matter that the official held a senior position, he should still be punished for his sexual misbehaviour and corruption. Nipon also called on other BMA officials who feel they were treated unfairly by the senior official to file a complaint with the Administrative Court.
