Chavalit rules out divisiveness from charter rewrite

"The country has seen 18 constitutions, it does not matter if one more charter is to be amended," he said.

Chavalit said the situation would not spiral out of control because the people have experienced so many repeats of charter amendments. He predicted tension would dissipate eventually.

He urged politicians to focus on addressing the people's grievances and fighting poverty rather than bend on revising the political system. "I don't think this charter will be the last to be amended, Thailand is slated to see many more charters," he said.

He also said he saw no justification about the penalty on party dissolution, arguing that the punishment would not improve on the political system. He was commenting on the upcoming Election Commission ruling on electoral fraud linked to two coalition parties, Chart Thai and Matchima Thipataya.
