Royal chariot on display at National Museum

More than 500 people a day view two chariots on display at the National Museum that will be used during the funeral service of HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana.

The number of spectators has been increased from an initial 100 per day.

Only 20 are allowed to enter a room where the chariots are undergoing repair. They can stay for no more than 15 minutes.

Museum director Somchai na Nakhon Phanom said an internal road would soon be resurfaced with asphalt to accommodate the chariots, one of which carries a maximum weight of 40 tonnes, when they are pulled to the crematorium built in nearby Sanam Luang.

Fine Arts Department director Kriangkrai Sampatchalit said a ring road around Sanam Luang linking the museum and the crematorium would also be resurfaced to prevent damage to the wooden centuriesold chariots.

A section of the museum's fence will also be demolished. Power and telephone lines over the front gate will be removed to make way for the chariots, he added.
