Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarakon set a new Olympic record in the women's 53-kilograms weightlifting division by heaving 126kg in the clean and jerk en route to winning the gold medal in Beijing on Sunday.

The previous Olympic record was set by China's Yang Xia at the Sydney Games in 2000.

The Thai made a final attempt to break the clean and jerk world record but her 130kg lift was unsuccessful.

South Korean Yoon Jinhee beat Belarus Nastassia Novikava on body difference for the silver medal as both made the two-lift total of 213 kgs.
